The National Park embodies five main wildlife habitat (open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marsh land) and covers part of a Pleistocene lake basin now dry.

Aberdare National Park is an area of moorland offering perfect location for hill walking. The Aberdares is a volcanic range that forms the Eastern wall of the Rift Valley, running roughly 100 km north-south between Nairobi and Thompson’s Falls.
